Dr. Helena Karasti
Vita
Helena Karasti is an interdisciplinary scholar with longitudinal research interests in ethnographic practice studies, participatory design, computer supported collaborative work and information infrastructure studies. Her main empirical domains of investigation include healthcare and environmental research. She has published in the topic areas of scientific data/information management, research infrastructure formation, infrastructuring, integrations of ethnography and participatory/collaborative design, participation, and researcher reflexivity. She has recently co-edited three special issues: ‘Knowledge Infrastructures’ for Science & Technology Studies (2016), ‘Infrastructuring and Collaborative Design’ for Computer Supported Cooperative Work (2017, 2018), and ‘Unfolding Participation over Time in the Design of IT (2018) for CoDesign (2018).
Helena Karasti received her doctoral degree in Information Systems from University of Oulu in 2001, docent degrees in Information Systems with specialization in Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) at University of Turku in 2008, and with specialization in Information Systems’ Infrastructuring at University of Oulu in 2015. Karasti has worked as professor at University of Oulu and Turku (Finland) and Luleå University of Technology (Sweden). She has been guest professor in the Department of People and Technology at Roskilde University (Denmark), visiting scholar in the Institute for Advanced Studies on Science, Technology and Society (IAS-STS) in Graz (Austria), and post doc in the Department of Communication at University of California, San Diego (USA).
